dexter, so referred to as dadu, is my 10 year old labrador retriever who has lost 80% of his eyesight due to cataract, which is the result of hereditary diabetes. but dont let his condition fool you. he has fought like how a true spirited dog would. we have seen him reduced to a mere 14 kilos and spring back up to the weigh he carries now. he is healthy and doing well but thats another story.
with time, he has become the eldest member of my family (the whole 1 dog year = 7 human years calculation). and he demands the service and respect that an elder in the family deserves. he does get supremely pampered by mom and didi and gets his way with tearing away all my tshirts.
now, lately he has become very cranky, thanks to the punishing summer in bombay city. and that leads to problems. he would sit to have breakfast with dad, he just loves it. and dad has to eat with him. if he doesnt, dadu would not like that one bit and will not come close to dad for an entire day.
something like that happened today. dadu was snoozing when dad started his breakfast. dad didnt wanna wake him up and so took his breakkie into the bed room and ate quietly. now, what dadu lacks in sight, he more than makes up in smell. he smelled food, got up, went to the kitchen to eat breakfast with dad and did not find him there... thats it... dad realised that he knew... so he took the plate back into the kitchen and asked dadu to come and eat with him.
it was too late by then as dexter just turned and walked away.
now, my father is a simpleton. all his life, he has just known to provide for his family and never fallen into the trap of the fancies. he hails from a small village in gujarat and at best an undergrad from a gujarati school. so he has a problem with words in english and certain pronunciations. to get dadu to come eat dinner with him again. he got up, started walking around dadu and convincing him,
